Last Post Of 2013

December 31, 2013 - Here we go, another year is coming to an end. Some of the countries like Australia, Japan, Philippines and UK - have welcome 2014 already and in about 2 hours, I will welcome 2014 as well. So it's time to reflect on the year that was ... 2013.

2013 was like a roller coaster ride. There were ups and there were downs. I feel like it was a tough year for me - mentally and physically. It felt like déjà vu when I came back to the United States and knowing that I will be alone once more. One thing was certain though - things weren't the same and the environment has truly change. But I trudge along each day doing what I know is the best. I do notice that my patience level has gone down a bit especially in certain situations and circumstances. So I will need to get that back up to the level I want it to be and just go with the flow. And that, my readers is my first resolution for 2014.

Maybe age is catching up on me but I can't seems to get myself into consistently working out like two years ago. I have set my mind in doing Insanity all over again but I still have not achieve the level of fitness that I want to be before doing the workout again. I was playing ball for awhile but after getting hammered and hurting my back, I have slowly ease myself out of playing. We that being said, I have two goals - first, start workout out consistently and second, pick up a new sport - I'm thinking golf.

If you found my social life this year, can you please tell it to come back home. Social life was pretty dull this year.  Maybe it's because I am getting older that I have cut down drastically on going out especially on work nights. The good thing is that I spend less, the drawback is that sometimes I don't even know what I want to do. I don't think I even hit any clubs this year to watch a DJ play. Not that I have been hiding in my place, I have been out but not as much as I used to be. I do need though if I want to meet new people to hang out with. So I think its time to hit the scene again but not like 2011.  If there is a good DJ, I will go even if I'm going by myself. And time to hit the museums and social scene as well. Who knows, maybe I will meet someone in 2014 as well.

Well, I have a lot more resolutions that I want to do but I will keep them to myself ^_^.  Two more hours and its 2014. Go enjoy yourselves but don't go overboard. Don't drink and drive and Stay Safe and Have a great time ushering in the New Year. Wishing you all the great health and prosperity in 2014.

Namaste...

Album Review: Ad Brown - Something For The Pain

This review can also be found at Trance Hub
http://trancehub.com/v3/reviews/ad-brown-something-for-the-pain/

It’s been a couple of years since Ad Brown burst into the EDM scene and finally he has released his debut album entitled “Something For The Pain.” The album took Brown close to 30 months dwindling 100 demos down to 14 tracks that would surely be liked by EDM lovers out there.

The album begins with some chill vocal tracks in Ready and Waiting with Hannah Ray and More with Tess. These tracks gets you into the mood with some amazing harmony before a bigger, deeper progressive sound comes into play in Thrive, a track he collaborated with Stan Kolev and another vocal track - Run To You, featuring the strong vocals of Antonia Lucas. Melodic xylophone keys are predominant in Tears while piano notes resonate throughout Sorry and that whispered lyrics is quite calming.

Brown change the tempo of the album with Pulse, a collaboration with Shawn Mitiska that started out with increasing bass line before settling down with lush melodic beats. Renee Six exudes dramatic emotions in the title track Something For The Pain which was released last year in the compilation ISOS 10. Some uplifting moments can be felt in the next two tracks - Up All Night with Steve Kaetzel & Kerry Leva and All I Need before Been A While brings contrast with some strong male vocals and that "housey" beats.

Tempo increases in Like The Sunrise, second track he collaborated with Kaetzel but this time features Arielle Maren’s voice and Lie Awake which features Ray’s voice before ending the album by bringing down the tempo with a classic track in Tonight with Mango & Leva

Ad Brown’s debut album is an interesting though not a stellar production. The album cannot be peg to one type of EDM genre since it got a mix of house and trance tracks. Some of Ad Brown’s known hits weren't include but EDM lovers will still enjoy the smoothness and chill factor of this album. And who knows, maybe one of the tracks is truly Something For the Pain.

Recipe: Pumpkin Cheesecake

Pumpkin Cheesecake

Thanksgiving is here once again and it means Thanksgiving dinners. Tons of food - turkey, stuffing, sides and of course desserts. And if you need to bring a dessert, why not try to make one instead of buying store brand. Here is my recipe from Pumpkin Cheesecake and one thing for certain - there is no baking. Yup.. NO BAKING!! And you can make this Thanksgiving day but I would prefer to make it the night before.

Total Time: 30 minutes

Ingredients:
1 pkg (8 oz) Cream Cheese, softened (Store brand will suffice)
1 can (15 oz) pumpkin puree (I love Libby's 100% Pure Pumpkin)
1/2 cup sugar
1 tsp cinnamon
1 tub Whipped Topping, thawed or Whipped Cream
1 Graham Pie Crust (6 oz)

Preparation:
Beat cream cheese, pumpkin, sugar and cinnamon with electric mixer on medium speed until well blended.
Stir in 1 cup of the whipped topping or whipped cream.
Spoon the mixture into crust
Refrigerate for three hours or overnight.  Serve topped with the remaining whipped topping or cream.

Tips:
Make sure the cream cheese is softened or else you will have a hard time mixing even with an electric mixer.
Don't like to use Cream Cheese? not to worry, you can use Neufchatel Cheese - 1/3 less fat than a regular Cream Cheese.
Want more of the Pumpkin taste? Replace cinnamon with pumpkin pie spice.
You can also add 1/4 tsp of nutmeg and 1/2 tsp vanilla extract for added taste.

Enjoy and have a Happy Thanksgiving!

Album Review: Solarstone Presents Pure Trance Volume 2

This review can also be found at TranceHub.com

Pure Trance Vol. 1 brought back what Trance is about. Pure Trance Vol. 2 made sure that Trance stays by delivering a more purer sound of trance.

Solarstone has released the second volume of Pure Trance. His way of reminding us what trance is all about. This time he brought in another pure trance producer - Italy’s own Giuseppe Ottaviani.

The journey to pure trance begins with Winkee’s take of Perfect Destiny by Adam Nickey, a blend of soft melody, rolling kick drums and haunting vocals that would be the theme of the disc one. Solarstone truly made an amazing mix - balancing the tempo while keeping pure trance all throughout. I was intrigued by Lovers, a track on his Pure album, this one was more robust with Lemon’s deeper voice than of Solarstone.

Halfway through the disc, Solarstone drops his Pure Mix of the Love Theme from Blade Runner. Though I truly adore this track, it was not my favorite. That distinction goes to the next track - Future Disciple’s Kwiwakurra. This track was truly melodic and makes you wanna just close your eyes and drift away. Solarstone then takes us through truly inspiring and quite beautiful mashups of Ferry Corsten & Betsie Larkin’s Made of Love with John O’Callaghan’s I’ll Follow and Ben Lost’s Jump The Next Train with Franz’s Emerge. The latter closing his part of Pure Trance album.

Giuseppe begins his part of the album with Prophecy by Alex Matteo, a soulful track filled with melodic piano chords. He then takes us to a journey of uplifting sounds and vocal trance beauties which include the classic Big Sky by John O’Callaghan & Audrey Gallagher as well as tracks for his Magenta album - Brilliant People and Waiting On Sunday. He delivers a beautiful ending to this chapter with Will Atkinson’s Hermosa. What a sweet finish! The track is filled with haunting chant and lush melodic keys that surely put a smile on your face and put you into a feel-good mood.

The energy of both disc is quite different - Solarstone was quite subtle - softer melodies that provide calmness. Giuseppe was more upbeat - feeling the room with uptempo keyboard chords and that lush big room sound. Yet both kept it within the realms of Trance, which is what Pure Trance is all about. The transition on both disc is seamless while the selection of tracks as well as the progression from track to track was fantastic.

This surely is a must-have for trance lovers out there. And for those who think trance is gone - take a listen to Pure Trance and it will change your mind.

How to Help the Victims of Yolanda in the Philippines

On November 8, 2013 Philippine Time, Super Typhoon Yolanda (International Name: Haiyan) made first landfall in Central Philippines with relentless winds, torrential rain and dangerous storm surge. The typhoon has been called the strongest tropical cyclone in the world with sustain wind speeds of 315 kph (195 mph). The Category 5 storm's path traveled across the Visayas, which was devastated by a 7.2 magnitude earthquake almost three weeks ago. The earthquake destroyed at least 50,000 homes and force thousands to live in tents. And those evacuees had to be evacuated before Yolanda made landfall.

The aftermath of Yolanda/Haiyan was utter devastation. An estimated 10,000 people were killed while scores are still missing. Yolanda's path of destruction was felt more in the island of Samar particularly the provincial capital Leyte and the city of Tacloban where 80 percent of the city was destroyed according to Chief Superintendent Elmer Soria. There are reports of looting as Filipino soldiers and police are being deployed to restore law and order while providing aid.  The town of Guiuan, Samar - where Yolanda made its first landfall - is said to be largely destroyed while UN said that the city of Baco was 80% under water.

President Benigno Aquino III has declared a State of National Calamity. The Philippines need your help.

Must See: Fête Paradiso

Went to Fête Paradiso this weekend at Governors Island. It's a traveling Parisian festival with vintage carnival rides and carousel that are from late 19th and early 20th century. It is really a great way to spend a day with family or friends - enjoying the rides while getting nostalgia.

One of the biggest attraction is the bike carousel
the 19th century carousel is one of the only two built in the world.

20th century Music-Hall Ball Guzzler. See anyone familiar?

Beethoven?

Mascot?
Definitely a Must See in New York City!

Fête Paradiso is open every weekend until September 29. The festival is at Governors Island. For more info - http://www.feteparadiso.com/

Tips: Hiking Alone

It is not recommended to hike alone, especially if you are unfamiliar with area you are planning to hike. But sometimes, you got that thirst for adventure that needs to be quench (like mine) so you go ahead and tackle that trail. Here are some tips when you are hiking alone.

1. Let your family/friends know your plans. Give someone a "heads up" that you are going for a hike. Give them the location of your hike as well as estimated time that you are going. And don't forget to let them know that you are back so they won't worry about you if they don't hear from you for awhile.

2. Check in on Social Media. Everyone or I should say, most people, have smart phones and data plans. So utilize it by checking in on Foursquare or posting status on Twitter or Facebook. That way, someone knows where you are and how you are doing.

3. Pack Essentials. Make sure you packed essentials that day before your planned hike especially since you are doing this alone. Ensure that you have water, snack bars, first-aid pouch, suntan lotion, light jacket and flashlight for a day hike. Make sure you have enough water to last you the entire hike plus extra especially during summer time when your dehydrate faster. Make sure your phone is fully charge as well.

4. Bring a Map/Trail Map. This is really important if you are going to hike an unfamiliar area. Plan ahead by searching online. If that hiking area has a ranger station, stop by and ask them for trails. Park rangers are always happy to give you suggestion on which trails to take and it is also nice to let them know that you are there.

5. Always follow the trail. Don't be too adventurous and leave the trail especially in unknown areas. Look for  trail markers on trees and/or rocks. If you hike through New York, most of the trail are marked with a rectangular shape painted green on trees. When I went to Sonora Dessert in Arizona, the trail was marked with stones pile on each other.

6. Bring a Hiking Pole. Hiking Poles are good to have because it provides stability especially on rough terrain. It is also good to have to probe the depth of mud or water and in case you encounter wild animals like snakes. If you do not have a hiking pole, find a long sturdy branch before you start your hike.

7.  Time your hike. Most nature parks close on sun down so timed your hike to ensure you won't get stuck on the trail when the sun sets. It will be harder to find the trail in the dark. This is also the reason why you need a flashlight just in case you do get stuck up in the trail at dusk.

8. Watch your step especially after rain when the ground is soggy or the rocks slippery. Take your time to prevent injuries.

Hopefully these tips are useful. Enjoy nature and the great outdoors but stay alert of your surroundings.

Album Review: Giuseppe Ottaviani - Magenta

Giuseppe Ottaviani - Magenta Album Cover

Magenta is the color of summer 2013!

If you research “Magenta”, it will tell you that the color symbolizes universal harmony and emotional balance. And this is what Giuseppe Ottaviani intended to do with his second studio album. This 15-track album is filled with harmonious tracks produce with collaboration from fellow trance producers and vocalists. Let's take a journey into the sounds of “Magenta.”

"the colour Magenta represents universal love at its highest level. The album's concept is exactly that. Music intended to promote the very same essence the colour does." - Giuseppe Ottaviani

The album starts with “Rush”, a breakbeat filled uplifting track with hints of drum-n-bass vocalled by Lo-Fi Sugar. This was followed by “Love Will Bring It Around”, which features Eric Lumiere. The lead single of the album is filled with melodic percussion and piano melodies working harmoniously with Lumiere's amazing strong voice that would surely you put a smile in your face. “Stars” with Linnea Schössow brings in haunting vocals, dreamy melody and pulsing bass line - a forte of Ottaviani's production. He follows with “Illusion” with Stephen Pickup, a “GO!” alum, bringing in a more progressive sound.

Some electro comes into play in “Cold Flame”, the first non-vocal track of the album. The track is filled with distorted bass coupled with uplifting string melodies that borders the boundaries of trance and electro music. He then brings us back to uplifting and melodic vocal trance with “Gave Me” vocalled by Seri followed by “I Am Your Shadow” with Audio Cells and Shannon Hurley. This track is fast becoming one of my faves from the album due to its complete balance of spewing bass lines, uplifting melodies and the dynamic-haunting voice of Ms. Hurley. Ottaviani teams up with Faith once more for “Nothing Wrong”. This melodic track is a great follow up to “Angel”.

Ottaviani brought in some harder trance in “Feel The Music” and “Waterpark”. The build up on Feel The Music is amazing with high octane beats and techno riffs while Waterpark is filled with melodic synths and energetic bass line that would surely make you want to dance. He brought in his signature style in “Heal This Empty Heart” vocalled by Alana Aldea. While slowing things down in “Waiting On Someday” with features the voice of Vitamin B wrapped in melodic string riffs  and emotional chords. Haunting vocals courtesy of Audrey Gallagher came into play in the melodic track “Walk This World With Me”.

Ottaviani teamed up with two of the biggest producers in the latter part of Magenta. He collaborated with Egyptian duo Aly & Fila in producing “Brilliant People” which contains powerful bass line and a breakdown filled with beautiful piano melodies and haunting female chant. Then he teamed up with Ferry Corsten for “Magenta”, the title track to close out the album. This track has it all with symphonic strings, deep melodic grooves and synths and a melodic that you would surely get you humming.

The color magenta means universal harmony and balance. And Ottaviani surely shown that with this album. The Italian producer has provided us the tools to paint the summer... Magenta!

Recipe: Miso-Glazed Stuffed London Broil

I visited Mitsuwa the other day and came home with a couple of Japanese ingredients including Enoki Mushrooms, Rice Vinegar, Nira and Miso Paste. I decided to incorporate this with the dish I wanted to make tonight. You can stuffed the meat the night before which I did with this recipe. Or you can make this 2 hours ahead of your cooking time.

Miso-Glazed Stuffed London Broil

1/2 cup garlic, minced
1/2 cup Nira
1/2 cup parsley
2 tbsp paprika powder
1 tbsp lemon pepper powder
1 tbsp Japanese rice vinger
10 bell mushrooms, quartered
1 pkg Enoki mushrooms, cleaned.
3 tbsp miso paste
1 1/2 lb London Broil

Mix the first three ingredients.
Cut a pocket into the London broil and sprinkle paprika and lemon pepper. Stuff with the mixed herbs and close with toothpicks. Rub the outside of the London broil with pepper. Refrigerate overnight.
Place the London broil on a broiler pan or aluminum pan. Broil each side of your steak for 10-12 minutes for well-done. 7 - 10 for medium.
While the steak is broiling, add mushrooms, rice vinegar and miso paste into a heated pan. Covered for five minutes or until the mushrooms are soft and miso paste has melted. Turn to low heat until you the steak is ready.
Place steak on a plate - whole or sliced, glazed the top with the miso sauce top with the mushrooms.

Served on top of arugula salad. Or you can sliced it up
