Movie Review: The Book Of Life

The Book Of Life is an animated film where a group of students visiting a museum were led to a secret tour of the museum by Mary Beth. They ended up in exhibit about Mexico. In the middle of the exhibit was The Book Of Life, which contains how the world were shaped. She then proceeds to tell them the story of three friends - Manolo, Joaquin and Maria in the town of San Angel during the Day of the Dead. The two gods - La Muerte (Kate del Castillo) and Xibalba (Ron Perlman) - decided to make a bet about who Maria will choose between Manolo and Joaquin.  But Maria's father, General Posada decided to send her away after causing a ruckus. During that time, Manolo was trained to become a bull fighter by his dad Carlos Sanchez (Hector Elizondo) while Joaquin became a soldier and a town hero with the help of a magic medal given to him by Xibalba.

On the day Manolo (Diego Luna) is set to fight the bull, Maria (Zoe Saldana) came back from Europe while Joaquin (Channing Tatum) came back to visit as well. That's when the rivalry started between Manolo and Joaquin. Who will win the heart of Maria?

I must say that this film surprised me in a good way. The animated was crisp and clear which is a major props to Reel FX. The storyline was easy to follow and the acting was superb especially for the three major characters. Major props to the tres mirachi - their quirky lines made me laugh a couple of times.

The music was amazing particularly two songs - Apology and I Love You Too Much. The latter will surely become a big hit. The film is quite vibrant, filled with color even during some of the sad scene and Land of the Forgotten.  Definitely go see The Book Of Life, its not only a great movie, its also full of life lessons.

New York Comic Con

It was my first time attending New York Comic Con and it sure was an experience. I felt like it was Halloween in the middle of October. The Jacob Javits was packed with people from all walks of life dress in various costumes from Marvel/DC characters to Cosplays.

Some of the costumes were amazing. There was Master Chief, Borderlands Character and tons of Guardians of Galaxy. Even saw the Real Peter Griffin, some of the KA characters

There were also personalities that were present such as Kevin Smith, Stephen Amell (Aarow), Jack McBrayer (30 Rock), Lucy Lawless (Xena), Jen and Sylvia Soska, Michiteru Okabe (Resident Evil Revelations) and the cast of Daredevil - Vincent D'Onofrio, Deborah Ann Woll and Charlie Cox.

There were tons of collectible exhibits as well as exclusives. There was a large amount of Robotech exhibit as well as Voltron. I cannot wait to get my hands on Robotech Super Deformed Blind Boxes. They are being released before the 30th Anniversary of Robotech next year.

Also on hand was the Batman 70th Anniversary exhibit which showcase the various batman suits worn during the last few batman films. And USPS released the Batman stamps and first day covers as well.

Tips for Newbies (like me):
  • Get there early especially if you want to go to certain panels that are quite popular. This year's biggest panel was The Walking Dead. The panel was at 3pm but it was already full when I got there by 11 am. If I only knew ahead of time, I would have gone and lined up closer to the opening time (10 am)
  • Wear comfortable shoes. If you aren't dressing up, make sure to wear comfortable shoes since you will be doing a lot of walking unless all you want to do is go to the panels.
  • Get ready for the crowd. I went on a Saturday and it was packed! There are aisles where you cannot practically go through because of foot traffic as well as people who are checking out the booths including those in line to grab autographs or comic-con exclusive. And with that last line.
  • Get there early (again). If you want to grab one of those Comic Con Exclusive, be there early since they are usually limited for the day. I remember going to the Loot Crate booth and wanting to grab one of the exclusive NYCC lootbox only to be turned away and told to come back the next day. That only works if I was going to be back next day. Same thing happen an Toy Tokyo. So if you are into collectibles and want those exclusive. Be.There.Early.
  • Be courteous and polite. There are tons of people who dressed up for the event and if you want to take their picture, just ask and most would gladly pose for you. If they said no, don't force them - NYCC has a sexual harassment policy and you have to abide by it.
Cannot wait for next year!

Movie Review: Deliver Us from Evil

Deliver Us from Evil is a crime-horror film about based on the life of NYPD cop Ralph Sarchie (Eric Bana) who meets Mendoza (Edgar Ramirez), a renegade priest, when he and his partner, Butler (Joel McHale) stumbles upon a case of paranormal experience. Together, they will try to solve this paranormal phenomena before it gets worst and he losses his wife Jen (Olivia Munn) and their child.

What I Like:
There is really nothing to like - acting was good but that was it. Weird seeing Joel McHale in a serious role even though his characters had some funny quips once in awhile. Seeing Olivia Munn especially during the initial scene, was good. Special effects and make-up was excellent though especially on Sean Harris who plays Santino, one of the main protagonist.

What I Dislike:
Pretty much disappointed with this movie. I love horror flicks and after watching this movie, won't even consider it. There were only two scenes that made the moviegoers jump on their seats. This movie was dubbed "disturbing enough to unsettle your sleep for weeks," well, I will definitely have a good night sleep tonight and the only disturbing thing that would bug me is the money I spent for the movie ticket.

Verdict:
Save your money.

Album Review: In Search of Sunrise 12: Dubai

Summer is upon us and Richard Durand is proud to bring us some beats to bring to the beach in this year’s “In Search Of Sunrise” compilation. The 12th edition brings us to the middle eastern world of Dubai, the rapidly growing and ever expanding city. The three-disc CD features compilation done by Durand as well as a guest compilation mix by Lange. So what does this compilation bring to the table? Come with me and let’s check it out.

Durand delivered smoothness in disc 1 right from his opening track, “Dubai Desert Fish.” The subtle beats mixed with melodic rhythms is a nice start to this compilation. Even the vocals tracks have subtle smoothness to them especially in “The Space Between”, “Chasing Stars,” “Lost Soul” and my favorite track “Come With Me.” But don’t let this smoothness fool you though, tracks such as “Sambuca”, “Epic” and “Sphinx” bring in some rockin beats to make things a little bit interesting.

If disc 1 was all about smoothness, disc 2 is like a roller coaster ride. A lot of progressive sounds on this second mix with Durand switching things constantly. He dropped melodic tracks such as Gai Barone’s “Eve”, “Atlantis” and David Broaders take on “Forever In Our Hearts” mixed in between bangers such as “Better in Time,” “Ten Thousand Suns,” “Karma” and Cold Rush’s take on “Imagination.” He then close out this mix with a barrage of uplifting tracks from Driftmoon’s “The Inquisitor” to Ferrin & Morris’ “Amatoria.”

Durand then hand over the reigns to Lange for the third mix of the album. And he didn’t disappoint - churning out progressive tracks such as “Hussar,” “Verano” and Kris O’Neil’s take on the classic “Just Be” as well as some underground bass line courtesy of “Quantum” in the Future Disciple remix, “Out of Coverage” and “Hey! While The Sun Shines.” The transition between tracks were superb especially between the two vocal tracks - “History” and “Never Far.” He closed his mix with two banging tracks in “Zeal” and “Melbourne.”

In Search of Sunrise 12” is an amazing album with seamless transition and good selection of tracks. The album is definitely a great album to listen to this summer and beyond. The album is out now so go and grab your copy.

Movie Review: Captain America: The Winter Soldier

Captain America: The Winter Soldier is a sequel to the 2011's Captain America: The First Avenger.  The film is set two years after the battle of New York (Avengers). Steve Rogers (Chris Evans) now works for S.H.I.E.L.D. under Director Nick Fury (Samuel L. Jackson).  While sent on a mission, he discovers that Agent Natasha Romanoff (Scarlett Johansson) had a separate mission. So he confronted Fury after returning and he was brief on a project.

Fury was then attacked while on his way to meet with Agent Maria Hill (Cobie Smulders). He survives the initial attack only to be ambushed by the Winter Soldier (Sebastian Stan). Fury escapes to Rogers' apartment and warned him that S.H.I.E.L.D. has been compromised by Hydra before being gunned down.

Together with Romanof and with the help of Sam Wilson and Agent Hill, Rogers sets out to uncover the truth and bring Hydra down.

Like:
This sequel has a lot of more action and adventure. It's packed with tons of CGI effects especially the aerial battle that was the highlight of the film. Acting was superb especially the new characters. Story was easy to follow and you will definitely be glued to it especially if you are a Marvel junkie or an action junkie.

Dislike:
Nothing really to dislike with this film.

Don't forget to stay when the credits start - there is a mid-credit scene and an end credit scene.

Movie Review: The Other Woman

The Other Woman is a comedy about three woman - Carly (Cameron Diaz), Kate (Leslie Mann) and Amber (Kate Upton) - who became friends and plotted ways to get back against Mark (Nikolaj Coster-Waldau), the husband of Kate, who is cheating with Carly and then Amber.

Like:
The acting was great especially Leslie Mann and Cameron Diaz. Both of them have that push and pull thing going on.  Major props to Nikolaj as well with his acting skills especially in the middle and latter part of the movie. The scenery were gorgeous.

Dislike:
Being a comedic film, I was expecting more laughter in the theater. But the place was mostly silent the entire film. I think I only heard the crowd laugh like three times the entire duration. Some of the scenes of the movie seems unconnected - jumping from one scenario to the next.

Conclusion:
Save your money and wait for it to come out on DVD or Netflix

Recipe: Menudo

Someone handed me a bag of raisins and that gave me the idea of making Menudo. Menudo is a staple in almost every Philippine gatherings and almost a comfort food. Everyone has different interpretation when it comes to this dish. I used Chicken and Pork with this recipe as well as Cayenne Powder instead of Paprika to give it a kick. Also, since I cannot find pork liver, I used chicken liver instead.

Ingredients:
2 lbs pork, cubed
1/2 lb chicken liver
1 chicken leg quarter, cubed
4 hotdogs, sliced
4 small potatoes, cubed
4 medium carrots, cubed
4 large plum tomatoes, diced
1 medium yellow onion, diced
1 yellow pepper, diced
3 tbsp garlic powder
3 tbsp cayenne powder
1 can (10 oz) chicken stock
1 cup raisins
1 can (6 oz) tomato paste
3 tbsp cooking oil
1/2 cup soy sauce
3 tbsp fish sauce (patis)

Cooking Procedure:

  1. Combine soy sauce and fish sauce in a boil. Add in pork and chicken and marinate for 10 minutes.
  2. Heat cooking oil in a pot. Add in onion and garlic powder, saute for a minute.
  3. Add in pork and chicken and cook until brown. About 5 to 7 minutes
  4. Pour in chicken stock. Add in cayenne powder, hotdogs and chicken liver.
  5. Stir in tomato paste. Add in raisins, potatoes, carrots and yellow pepper.
  6. Once its boiling. Lower heat to simmer. Simmer for 10 - 15 minutes.
  7. Serve with rice.
Enjoy!

Variation:

  • You can cut down on the cayenne powder if you don't want it to have too much of a kick. Or use paprika instead.
  • Use tomato sauce instead of tomato paste.
  • Pork liver instead of chicken liver. If you are using pork liver, make sure you saute it first in garlic to remove the gamey smell.
  • Instead of fish sauce, use calamansi or lemon.

Recipe: Chicken Rice Curry

Curry is a blend of spices used mostly in Indian cuisine. Curry has a lot of benefits like lowering your blood sugar, cholesterol and preventing the C word. This recipe is easy to make.

Ingredients:
4 chicken leg quarters, chopped to smaller portions
1 cup uncooked long grain rice
1 cup chicken stock
1 large onion, diced
1 cup green peas
4 potatoes, cubed
2 tablespoon minced garlic
4 tablespoon curry powder
3 tablespoon oil

Cooking Instruction:
  1. Heat oil in a cooking pot. Add garlic and onions. Saute for five minutes or until the onion is translucent
  2. Add in the chicken and cook until the chicken changes color.
  3. Add potatoes. Pour in the chicken stock.
  4. Add in curry powder and stir until blended.
  5. Add the uncooked rice and green peas.
  6. Cover and cooked for 25 minutes until rice is cooked

Movie Review: Noah

Noah is a fantasy film loosely based on biblical story about Noah's Ark. The film was directed by Darren Aronofsky. It stars Russell Crowe as Noah who was sent a message by God through his dream about ending mankind with a great flood. Together with his wife Naameh (Jennifer Connelly) and sons Shem (Douglas Booth), Ham (Logan Lerman) and Japheth (Leo McHugh Caroll), they set out on a journey to visit his grandfather Methuselah (Anthony Hopkins) where they would save Ila (Emma Watson) and with the aid of the Watchers, built the Ark while fending off the humans led by Tubal-Cain (Ray Winstone) in order to follow what the Creator has asked him to do.

Like:
The scenery and animals were amazing - the CGI and effects were life like especially all those animals. Like that it didn't follow the biblical story of Noah cause if it was, I am sure a lot of people won't be happy on how Aronofsky depicted Noah.

Dislike:
There were parts of the film where it just drag.

Overall:
It's a good film, just don't expect too much.

Movie Review: Divergent

Divergent is a science fiction film based on novel of the same name by Veronica Roth published in 2011. It is set on post-apocalyptic Chicago where the community is divided into five fractions - the Abnegation, Candor, Erudite and Dauntless. Abnegation runs the city while Dauntless are tasked to protect the site. The story follows Beatrice Prior (Shailene Woodley) who's father is part of the ruling council, Abnegation. During her test, she was found to be a divergent by Tori (Maggie Q) who tells her to keep her score secrets. Then during the choosing ceremony, she decided to go with the Dauntless Faction. She then had to undergo numerous test with the other new dauntless recruits while getting to know Four (Theo James) more. While undergoing training, she see's Jeanine (Kate Winslet) who leads the Erudite factions and founds out about their impending plans. Together with Four, they went on to try stop Jeanine's plans and in return flee the city to protect themselves.

What I Like:
I haven't read the book yet so I am not sure if it follows it or not but the story is quite interesting. The scenes and the storyline kept me glued to the screen. The scenery was spectacular especially on how they depicted post-apocalyptic Chicago. The actors did great depicting their characters especially Shailene Woodley, Theo James and Kate Winslet.

What I didn't like:
Other than the zip-line scene, there wasn't really much action to the film. It was almost more of the evolving love interest between Beatrice and Four rather than the plight of the factions. But like what I said, I haven't really read the book.

Verdict:
Definitely a good movie. Would I watch it again, ummmm...

Album Review: Moonbeam - Space Odyssey: Mars

Space Odyssey: Mars” is an epic journey through the different realms of the Electronic Music universe...

Star date 2014, it’s been four years since the last Space Odyssey went on a mission. Cosmonauts Pavel and Vitaly Khavleev are prepping the Moonbeam spacecraft for the second leg of the journey. The mission - travel to no man has gone before - “Space Odyssey: Mars.”

The journey begins with Special Mars 2014 remix of “See The Difference Inside” featuring the lovely vocals of Julie B. Reaching space altitude, the brothers guaranteed smoothness towards the red planet with techy beats of their track “Mirrors” before groovy trance beats courtesy of Cosmic Gate’s “Wake Your Mind” and “Twilight Is Coming.”

The duo brought in the percussion and analogue distorts in Hells Kitchen’s “Close Your Eyes,” their celestial take on Andain’s “You Once Told Me” and the Tvardovsky remix of Progreg’s “Sing For You” featuring the sultry vocals of Cary Less. The journey progresses with deep beats and guitars riffs of “Long Journey Home” by Kiholm & Josh Money before bringing us back to techy vibes courtesy of “Born To Scream.”

We are on final approach...

Moonbeam gradually slow things down but kept it melodic with Andy Duguid’s “In This Moment” mixing celestial beats with piano riffs and the angelic voice of Audrey Gallagher. They followed with electro beats of Allesandro’s “Awake” before engulfing us with their acid take of “Lovethief” by Mars Needs Lovers & Mmadcatz filling the spacecraft with deep bass lines and great percussion - a signal for the us to wake up from their deep hibernation. As we descend to the red planet, Moonbeam ends the first part of the journey with tron-like indie beats of Fromance’s “Back To Earth.”

Second part of the journey begins with some smooth grooves of 2Fashion’s “Such a Shame” preceded by percussion and deep basslines of Indifferent Guy’s “Danger” which features the hypnotizing voice of Eva Pavlova and Joshi’s “Raging Blue.” Before switching to a mellower house beats of Myon & Shane 54’s “Outshine” and Da Fresh’s “Angel.”

The duo switched to hyper-drive with techy riffs and deep basslines courtesy of Orbik’s “If It’s Love” and Jaytech’s melodic remix of “Your Secret’s Safe” by Julie Thompson and Super8 & Tab. They brought in the percussion-filled techy track “Twisted Mind” by Mier before progressing to some trance chops and distortions in “Morevenin” by Matt Fax. Moonbeam slowed things down with qoob’s “Apollo 17” and Vian Pelez's "The Fountain." The sooner track is my favorite of the album - melodic beats filled with piano riffs throughout - its almost like a signal that the journey is about to end.

We are now entering Earth’s atmosphere with a banger in Kris O’Neil’s take on “Do It Over” by Tom Cloud and Antonia Lucas. The journey ends with some smooth melodic beats of “Fancy” by Marsbeing.

With seamless transition, brilliant track progression and the ever so gorgeous Moonbeam melody, "Space Odyssey: Mars" will be a great addition your Electronic Music collection.

Movie Review: 300: Rise of an Empire

Warning: Spoiler Alert!

300: Rise of an Empire is the sequel to the 2006 hit 300. The film is based on the Frank Miller's graphic novel Xerxes which has not yet been released as of this post. The film is mostly set during the Battle of Artemisium and then the Battle of Salamis between the Persian Navy led by Artemisia (Eva Green) and Athenian Navy led by Themistocles (Sullivan Stapleton).

The film began with Queen Gorgo (Lena Heady) telling the story about the Battle of Marathon where Themistocles shot the arrow that led to the death of Persian King Darius I (Yigal Naor) and the eventual transformation of Xerxes (Rodrigo Santoro) to the "God-King" and set out to conquer Greece. The story then switches to Thermopylae where Themistocles meets with the council and convinces them to engage the Persian navy. The Greek Navy and Persian Navy battled for two days with the Greeks winning which led to Artemisia inviting Themistocles to her ship and offers him to be on her side. But he refuses which led her to seek revenge by destroying most of the Greek navy the following day and killing Scyllas (Callan Mulvey), Themistocles' friend. Thinking that she has killed Themistocles, Artemisia retreats. But Themistocles survives and learn of Leonidas and the 300 have been killed which led to a united Greece. He then leads a small fleet of Greek forces at Salamis and as he battle Artemisia. Queen Gorgo led Spartan Navy and and other allied armies surrounding the Persian navy forcing a retreat from Xerxes.

Is it a sequel?
300: Rise of an Empire is a sequel, well sort of. The film happen before and during the Battle of Salamis whereas the first movie was more of the exploits of Leonides and the 300 and what happen in Sparta.

Like:
The visual effects and the CGI is stunning with the film keeping its unique look of bringing a "comic-book" into life. This second film is definitely more gory with more bloods splattering and mangled body parts all throughout the film. The battle sequence are well choreographed and that "slow-mo" motion was well-placed on the sequence of the film. The storytelling was superb - giving viewers a quick but no-nonsense history of the main characters. Acting were excellent especially Eva Green and Sullivan Stapleton. Kudos to Lena Heady who transformed Gorgo from just being a queen to a warrior queen.

Dislike:
This film didn't have the "omph" like the first film. There were "huh" moments.

Overall:
The movie is great but not as great as the first film. But I would still highly recommend the film. Don't forget to watch it in 3D to make it more of a life-like experience.

Album Review: Markus Schulz - Scream 2

Get ready to Scream some more!

Markus Schulz is set to released "Scream 2", his fifth-studio album and the sequel to last year’s "Scream" album. The 17 track album is sort of Markus’ going back to his roots.

"Scream 2" kicks off with "Reloaded," a track bursting with big room sounds with a melodramatic break filled with haunting chant and rolling kick drums that would surely be a hit on a dance floor. Another dance floor ready track is "Dancing In The Key Of Life" with a higher pitched melody and faster bpm. And "In The Shadows" which shows Markus prowess in producing - blending spoken words seamlessly with big room melody and bass en route to a club room vibe.

There are also tracks that are geared towards the festival vibe and one of my favorite is "Remember This," the most sought after ID last year. Pulsating bass line and melodic synths are abundant on this track as well as in "Mardi Gras" and the darker "Destino" track.

The album is also filled with vocal tracks which might not please the purist listeners of trance. But give it a listen and you will be surprise how well Markus produced each track. Liz Primo’s voice in the piano-filled melodies of "Blown Away" is just amazing while jaw-dropping vocals by Liz Horsman in "Lord Knows" will surely be a fan favorite.

Markus showed his prowess in mixing again - combining old-school dance sound with modern day progressive synths in "Make You Fall" which features the powerful voice of CeCe Peniston. He then found the balance between Lady V’s sultry vocals and big room melodic synths in "Erase You." One of my fave of the album and the new “stalker anthem” as per Markus.

"Scream 2" ends with two great calming tracks - "Reflection" and "Towards The Sun," a track he collaborated with Rex Mundi. Both tracks got that feel-good upbeat vibe that puts a smile on your face.

Markus went back to his roots with the album. It might not be a journey down the rabbit hole but with stellar production and high quality tracks, "Scream 2" will surely be a great addition to anyone’s collection - whether you are a purist or a more progressive listener. So get ready to scream some more when "Scream 2" hits the stores on February 21.
